And another year gone....

I have been gone for awhile, and actually forgot I even *HAD* a blog until E mentioned it in passing one day. Life has changed quite a bit. I now work at a a small grocery, 2 out of 4 kids have graduated high school, 1 of those is now married, and 1 is on year 3 of a 6 year contract with the US Army.  Of the younger two, one is a junior in high school, and one will be in high school next year. So S1 came home from Iraq safe and whole. D1 married S1's best friend. While he was overseas, no bitterness there. (and if you can't feel the snark.....6 months later he is still upset.) DH took a new job, which we had high hopes for, but didn't pan out as well as we thought.  We were hand to mouth, payday to payevening, how to get milk for a while there.  Just surviving. No art, for either of us. No hobbies or fun unless it benefited the household budget or someone else bought it as a gift. No dreams, no way to get out of the mess we got ourselves into.  And now, we are back to new job, new hope, it can't be worse than the last.  And in all that I was looking for one thing online. ONE. And I could find snippets here and there, but not enough to work with.  Actual frugal living. Just google that and tell me how most of those results happen on food stamps.

 I already knew how to make my grocery dollars work.  Hi! I was a single parent food stamp mom for longer than I care to think about. Once a month cooking is a joke in that place. I was happy to get lunch leftovers, and DH was happy to take them. Scrap sewing?  Does NOT begin with precuts.  All I could think was "Are you people serious? Oh, hell, no. I hope that is the worst you live through." Really. Not in a bitchy way, but somethings just suck.  It's not to be bitchy, or judgy. It's just reality. If someone is googling "scrap yarn gifts" they should be able to make it with scrappy pieces of yarn.  Not minis or whatever.

In the midst of all this we had some family problems.  Some in-laws were constantly, CONSTANTLY, "triggering" (I kind of really hate that word) a spouse. To the extent that a holiday at home alone was better than being with the spouse and kids if involved the in-laws. Police were involved. It got ugly, and expensive. And the holidays were still coming up.  Can we say stress?

In light of all that, I have decided to take things in a new direction. The beginning of this blog was part of the OPAM challenge hosted by Kris Meares of Tag Along Teddies  and Sweet Peg of Happy in Quilting.   It is a great thing if it fits your life, and I finished so many projects thanks to their encouragement. But seasons come and go, and things change.  And now here we are.

I hope to sign up for next years OPAM. If fact, I just re-saved their sites to my toolbar. (It's kind of fascinating how much you lose from one 'puter to another) But for now, my goal is to be change I want to see in the world. ( I am not attributing that because I have have seen way to many different people....let's just go with it's true, shall we?) Less waste. Less stress. More beauty. More giving. More hobbityness and less scroogyness. Less wanting and needing and more helping and wrapping. (just because it's basics doesn't make it less worthy of giftyness.)

I am planning on reviewing actual scrappy patterns and books for both yarn and fabric.  I am planning on sharing the things I have done to save my home money and time. Some of them are and will be fails.  Some of them won't be. I won't do the math for you. (hell, I don't do the math for me, LOL)  But maybe there is something that you can pull that does help.  Most important, I want every mom or wife to know she's not the only one.  Most of us, and I would bet money that it is really all of us, have been there. Maybe for a week, maybe for years. But we all learned something, and that something isn't sponsored by Amazon (ps....I hate Amazon. They are my last resort.), or followed by a "may have been compensated by". I think if you need to compensate me, you are already realizing your failure. ( ahem....amazon). If I like what I see, I may facilitate a give-a-way. Or sponsor it out of my own pocket. I have a background in marketing, so I am familiar with the game.  (cue Reel Big Fish--Sell out with me to tonight, sell out with me......)

Here's my first book recommendation, no footnotes required. Get your hands on a copy of "The Science of Shopping". No, I don't remember the guy's name. Nor do I care. What  I do care about is how he walks you through marketing and sales angles in a way that leave you afraid to read an ingredient list in the store again.  And yes, I am. If I am interested in a product, I buy it, try it, keep or toss it. End of story. I let my dollar vote. And it carries a big stick.

My first project recommendation for yarn is find the cheapest granny shawl pattern you can find. They are almost all the same. And search for a free log cabin block for quilting. Really, its x*x x*a, x*b,x*c all the way around.  X is your starting square. 2*2, 2*4, 2*6, and on and on. And on. Mostly, just remember to research the public domain.  Because both of those should be in it.  I paid $6.00 (NOT REALLY...IT WAS IN STORE CREDIT!!!!!) for my granny shawl pattern because a) it was one page to put in a binder, and b) I liked the colors they used in the example photo by the header. It was the one by Ewe Ewe (here's a link just in case. I don't think they know I exist. And really, all you need is the first 2 rows. But I am  a basic crocheter.)

My first garden recommendation? Start a compost pile.  No walls, fences, or worms or whatever.  Just take the nasty veggies bits to a corner you don't go to often and dump them. Do the same thing next week. It is free. the worms will come on their own. Next year, dirt. And maybe some food and plants. I am not ashamed it admit I have harvested food from the compost pile. Celery, carrots, tatoes, whatever. It grows, I cook it.

My first household recommendation? Buy some vinager. Both kinds. Just have it on hand. Hair rinse? Got it. Counter spray? got it. Laundry softener? got it. Mildew? got it. I don't remember the last time I bough household cleaner.

Hopefully, next week I will remember I have this blog.  And maybe some photos. And I know there is always more snark...(blame my dad....he *thought* it measured critical thinking skills. The jury is still out on that.)

Almost done

Tomorrow is the last day of my 5 strands challenge.  The only problem with this is that the last 2 weeks have been pretty much a wash.  I had a very important work of heart to start, as well as some really busy kids.  Even as I type this, I am really paying more attention to the clock. High School choir is killing me!  Between the expenses and the events, it is becoming the center of our lives.  As well as dance, scouts, and basketball.  There were a few days in the last week that we were gone for 13 hours at a time!!  I don't know how people do this on a regular basis! 

Onto the progress.  Some days I did get 5 strands done, and others none, but most were actually 2 or 3 strands stitched up.  Here is where I left off 2 weeks ago.  The peice in the upper right is what all my stitching has been done on for last 2 weeks. 

I was frustrated that I hadn't had a lot of progress, and failing myself imposed challenge. But to be completely honest, I feel so much better about things now.

Because even with not getting as much done as I had wanted to each day, here is the picture I took 10 minutes ago....

What a pretty big difference!  The one thing I ran into was that I somehow got a huge knot in the skein of black thread, so I wound up just working on the one color for a while, since it was easier than working out the knot.



There is no open space in this pattern, so there is still quite a bit of work to do, but after tomorrow, I can take it at a more leisurely pace.

There are 8.5 by 8.5 inches of solid stitching here!  But the results have so far been worth it.  I kind of feel like I should by an extra frame to work on it in, but using frames really bothers my wrist for some reason. 

 I think for my next personal challenge, I am going to work on some crochet projects I have stashed away.  And I am only going to do it for 2 weeks, and see how that goes for  a while. 

Now, on to that work of heart.  A friend lost her husband suddenly last spring, and I had offered to make a quilt out of his shirts for her.  She was very grateful for the offer, but wasn't really interested.  After a few months, I ran into her and she had changed her mind.  She asked if I was still willing, but completely understood if I wasn't.  Well, what kind of friend would I be if I wasn't still willing?  So after a time she had gathered a couple together, and and I picked them up and went to work.  I now have all the individual blocks done!!! YAY!!

 I found a pattern here at the Thrifty Quilter. It was perfect for what I had to work with, and with a couple little tweaks here and there, it is coming along nicely.  I had 3 light shirts, so I purchased and prewashed 2 complimentary colors instead of also having red.  I really want the new fabric to kind fade away and let the shirts be the focus.  We'll see if that's what happens or not.  Ok. The clock is ticking !!!!

Week 2 of my little goal

Since I am now halfway through my month long goal of stitching 5 strands a day, I have come to the conclusion that Saturdays don't work.  There just isn't enough time. In light of that, my 5 strands a day has turned into 5 strands 6 days of the week.  And the reality is a day of rest from something is not a bad idea.  This week I finished 3 little projects and started a larger project.

This is where I was at the end of last week. One finish and a couple really good starts.

YAY! The ball is rolling!   This is the little heart I had started last week. It is so stinking cute! I don't a have a frame for it yet, but I have put a couple on my wishlist.  It is the only project which is truly finished.  It just needs a home.

Also finished is this little sewing machine motif. It will be the cover of a needlebook later. It was a quick little stitch, and I may make more next year to gift to crafty friends.

And the bottomless pile is changing! The little Mrs. stitch project is done, but it needs to pressed and cut to its finished size.  And the new project to work on is a mistletoe piece that I want to frame in a serving tray. It's a beautiful design from an older CrossStitcher magazine.  It will fit in with my preferred decor perfectly!

So for the upcoming week, the mistletoe will be the go to project.  I have stuck some little Christmas tags in the car to work on when I am waiting for kids and DH. I am not sure I am going to make as big of a dent in the project pile as I wanted.  But progress is progress, and I think I may make stitching part of my daily to-do's. Not 5 strands worth, there are days when I am up til midnight working on them. What's a challenge without a little pain and misery?  But maybe 2.  Now, off to work on today's stitching!

My little challenge project

Last week I had made a commitment to stitch 5 strands a day in cross stitch/embroidery.  In the last seven days, I only failed one day.  It was a crazy busy day, and I was in a lot of pain from the previous day's activities.  It hurt to sit, stand, walk.  I was just  miserable, and I probably wasn't much fun for the family, so then I felt even worse about it.  So it was just a wash.  However, the other six days, I did the 5 minimum or more!  I even finished stitching one of the many projects floating around!

Here is the piece I sort of focused on this past week.  Mostly because it was the one on top of the pile. It will hopefully be a little stocking stuffer for DH.  I was actually starting to wonder if I would get any of these projects done before Christmas, which is kind of what prompted this whole experiment.  That, and I feel like I'm in a place where I'm not growing as a person. I'm not getting better at anything, I'm not doing anything new, I'm not learning anything.  I'm just kind of here. And really, stitching 5 strands a day is kind of stupid, but it forces me to work on time management with out having outside commitments.

When I started my 5-strand stitching, this is where I was in the piece.  Now, 7 days later, I am finished!!! With the stitching, anyways.  That is all I care about right now. Done, done, and DONE!  My stocking will may hold the cute little Mrs version I started after finishing the Mr.  Because even after the all the years we've been us, I still feel like we should be excited and happy about being "us". It's not everyday, that would make me sick with the gooey-ness.  But once in a while. 

And in the pile, I found this little key-chain kit.  Still unopened, still with it's magazine it came with.  But I love the pattern, so even though it's not destined for a Christmas present, it's getting worked when I don't work on the Mrs.  But I like it.  I may even have a little frame for it go in.  I think the wood medium with a metal frame would look great on my desk. 

Now, off to decide if I "owe" 5 strands for the day I missed, or I if I need to practice letting it go.  Which I have a had a harder time with ever since that stupid movie.  My stubborn side rears it's ugly head and screams "NO. NO WE DON'T WANT TO LET IT GO AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO LET IT GO!!!"

About that pile of craft supplies...

 After deciding to do something about the over abundance of craft supplies, I started with gathering the stitching supplies.  Oh. My. Lanta.  There are a lot!  There were kits in drawers, and bags in closets, and patterns or magazines on EVERY bookcase or shelf.  There were some upstairs and downstairs. Some in various states of completion, from everything together in a bag to just needed a frame.  The photo on the right here is just the "little"? pile by the recliner.  Yeah.....I think I dream big, or something.

There isn't A pile. There are PILES!  These photos are kind of embarrassing. I mean, really? This is ridiculous!  But I've been around enough craft rooms to know this is kind of almost normal.  The piles may be yarn, or fabric, or paint or whatever, but they're there.  Some people are definitely better at organizing the piles, neatly folding fabric, or dedicated yarn bins, or whatever.  Me? Not so much.  

 This little basket is full (over full) of little kits I've accumulated.  Sadly, there are more that I have found, and I have no bigger baskets to contain them in!  So one will go into each vehicle for waiting times.  Since I always seem to be driving someone somewhere for something, this plan should make a pretty decent dent in the pile by the end of the school year.  Whatever I don't love love love can go into a gift box, and then some of the birthday panic will go away.

 This is the lovely pile of project bags that I found stashed all over.  I start one, and something comes up, so it gets put away and ....well, it stays put away.

Which is why this is a project kit that I have carried around for 20 years.  That's a little too long.  So I started it last spring.  The one before the one we just had.  There are three of them in this set, so it may be time finish them.  Although, at this rate, I can give them to a my great grandchildren as housewarming gifts.  Since I'd like them in my own kitchen, that time frame doesn't work.

So my solution?  5 strands stitched every day.  Period.  For a month.  No going to bed til they are done.  No carrying extras strands stitched over to the next day. They are happy accidents.  I've got a little calendar page in my notebook I can keep track in. I may need to bribe myself to keep it up, but I think once I see progress, it may be the only motivation I need.  I am not worried about any finish work there may be at this point, just getting the stitching done.  Maybe when I am little less overwhelmed in life, I can make the finish work a priority. It can be a whole other monthly challenge.

Off I go now.  There are some stitches waiting to happen!  I'll worry about the piles later.  After this one decreases a bit!

oooh, I may have hoarding issues

Recently I was looking for threads for a cross-stitch project.  One that may make D2 veeeerrry happy on Christmas morning. Or maybe St. Nicholas Day, depending on when I finish.  None of my "real" embroidery threads fit the color scheme I wanted, so in to the leftovers I went.  That may have been a mistake.  There are BAGS and BAGS of 'leftovers' I have saved over the years. Because, you know, I may need them. None of them are labeled. I have no idea what the color number is or which company it is from.  The same goes for fabric, fancy papers, and yarn.

So...My plan, or goal, or thing which needs to be done, is to use them or give them away.  I know there are widgets and whatever to help keep track. I have no idea if I have time to track one down.  So in the meantime, I will keep an actual tally sheet with my project basket to keep track.  Hopefully in the next week or so I will add a list of tallies to the side bar.  If anyone has need of a general item to finish a project, I will happily send it off in the mail. And by general, I mean:

2.5 x 2.5 cotton squares in blue

or

any lengths of green embroidery floss in 3's (or 2's, or single, or whatever!!)

or

acrylic yarn ends of any color

or

green cotton yarns


Just remember, we are going really generic.  If you want greens with no snowmen, I can handle that. If you want the green that matches your sofa cushions, I'm not sure I can help.

Time Flies When You're Having FUN!!

Well, about that time flies thing.  2 years ago was my last post.  Coincidentally, 2 years ago I spilled a still full, 32 ounce latte on my computer.  After some fits and starts, I finally have a computer that is ALL MINE, and is set up in a way that works for ME! (Sorry, family!!) It has been an amazing couple of years, as half of our kids have graduated high school and moved on to (hopefully) amazing futures and the other half have hit some pretty big milestones in their own lives.

Job changes have come and gone and come again, so for the first time in over a decade, DH and I are actually on the same schedule.  And I like him, so projects and volunteer activities have fallen by the wayside as we rebuilt our own relationship.  Not that it was bad, we just didn't see each other.  He worked his job, and me and the kids lived our lives, and sometimes we all got together.  While we were all awake.  At the same time.  But now it's time regain some of the things we let slide, or let go of completely.  And when 3 out of 4 kids say Mom should get her blog going again, if only because she actually got projects done with, I figured maybe I should listen to them.  DH had forgotten about it completely, and when the kids mentioned it, he said "get to work, woman" in that funny way he does. 

While I have almost completely enjoyed the last couple of years, there have been some really hard moments.  The kind that make your heart and eyes full.  The absolutely worst best moment was leaving our eldest 3,000 miles away.  The whole weekend I had with him was great, but that moment when I dropped him off and drove away for the last time was ONE OF THE HARDEST moments in my life.  And I know there are more to come.  He has 3 younger siblings.  And they may get married, And have their own children. And as absolutely amazing as those moments are, they apparently bring a sting I was NOT prepared for.  The moments where my baby wasn't there anymore, but a really earnest and hardworking man was with me in the car, or at the restaurant. Old Spice, you got nothing on the military when it comes to making a man out of my son. And we won't discuss your creepy factor.

So here we are.  I need to get projects done, as crafty and house and 'me' projects have been piling up.  As well as the supplies with which to do them.  I should probably start making some kind of project wish list, and write them all out to sort the things I actually want to do from the ones I feel like I ought to do.   One thing I am looking for specifically are monthly challenges, regardless of crafting skill/medium.  I find most classes in my area are introductory in nature, and while the instructors are good, there isn't a lot that I can take away from the class.  So apparently it is time for me to stretch myself a bit and get involved in some things that are a little less instructional and a little more creative stretching. So if anyone knows of any, pretty, pretty, pretty please, share them in the comments.

About that great start...

After being off to a great start, my finishes for August fell off.  We had 2 kids coming and going for a couple different events. Also the yard work needed a catch up.  Blah... I am starting to feel a little overwhelmed by all the house stuff that needs to be done.  DH says it doesn't NEED to be done, but things like trim and molding do simplify house work.  Sweeping is usually messier when one has the edge of the flooring to get the broom caught on.  And washing the window is tricky with exposed drywall.  It's all stupid little stuff, but it isn't getting done.  We are on year five, (FIVE!!!!) with a big hole in the rec room wall.  The reason? No one goes down there.  Except for EVERYONE.  It's where the tv is!!! So I've been puttering around trying to work on some these things, while also running the kids around and trying to work on my other projects.   Ok...deep breath.....

I started quilting S2's quilt, and was hoping to have it finished by now. Instead I wound up stripping paint off an old cabinet and prepping it for a new paint job.  I did finish two projects, thanks to their simplicity and portability. First was a scarf for D2.

She wanted it long and skinny. And with a lot of blue.  Thankfully, it finished off a few odds and ends of yarn for me.  After that was a shawl for me! YAY!

I'm not thrilled with it, since it's all scraps of acrylic yarn.  But I do love the colors and it'll keep me warm in the rec room we never use.  It's not quite as bright as the photo looks, the real colors are much more in natural/neutral color scheme. It also finished off some balls of yarn.

I also got the pincushion done for a friend.  She got a cute fabric that was from Western Washington Shop Hop a few years ago.  It has cute sayings all over it.  My favorite is "a clean house is a sign of a broken sewing machine."

She inherited some sewing notions from her MIL and Grandma to fill hers with.

School starts on Tuesday, Scouts the week after, and library club the week after.  We'll see what happens.

Great start for August!

After a few months of few to no finishes for OPAM, I might finally broken through that mental block.  This weekend, I finished 3 place mats and a pincushion.  I have a few projects lined up to finish, as well as some new small gift items I am finally getting around to.

Somewhere I didn't do the math for these. There are 6 of us in the family, and for some reason, I only made four.

The fourth one was finished months ago and is already put away with the Christmas decorations.  Maybe I ran out of fabric?  I don't remember.  And I have no idea what to do with it now, which is fine. I am pretty sure there some standard for crafter gifting involved here, LOL!

I have always wanted one of these, and I kept hoping DH would buy me one.  But after 10 years, I guess I just needed to make it myself.  Which is fine. But sometimes I don't want to DIY.  I know how to install a water heater too, but that doesn't mean I *want* to. So I grabbed a bunch of random novelty scraps, a used canning lid and sacrificed a rim and jar.  And giving up that jar and rim were kind of painful. I USE those. Fifty-two or more jars of jam every year.  Plus whatever else we decide to make. So he's buying me a case of the pretty green ones to use for canning to "make up."

Once we got the lid on, we realized this wasn't going to be usable for practical storage. DH gets those rims down tight.  So I stuffed it with my mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers old sewing notions.

The thread was so old it broke, the zipper didn't work easily, and the snaps were missing parts.  But I loved that they were "family pieces."  And they weigh the jar down enough that it doesn't tip when I'm sticking pins in.

This week, I have a few more UFO's I'm working on, as well as another Mason jar pincushion for a friend who sews.  But that's it for now.  I think. :)

Past the halfway point!

What a month!  Even though we cut back on the amount of camps the kids went to, it was still pretty crazy.  I got sick the first week, followed by a week of cubbie camp, followed by a week of VBS.  S1 had 2 trips in other parts of the state, so there was a bit of come and go on his part.  I did manage to accomplish a couple of finishes, but not as many as I had hoped. 

These first projects are more of the Halloween coasters I had made.

They are now officially all done!  All my favorite Halloween fabric scraps are used up and ready for some hot cider!  I haven't decided if the orange on black floral or the orange on white with bats is my all time favorite. 

Another OPAM finish is a felted yarn bowl, but the camera batteries died when I was taking photos.  So when I go grocery shopping, I'll grab some more.

Earlier this month, some friends had a yard sale.  T had some amazing stuff she was cleaning out, so I bought an old plaster fame.

Gold is not my color. With that said, I loved the style of the frame.

So I dug out some paint.  I painted it green, and then wiped it down to show some of the gold.

I actually finished with a light wash of a sparkly brown, but that photo isn't on the same memory card. ugh!

I haven't decided if it will be a pin board, or if I want to put wire in it for a memo board.  That is on my August list of stuff to finish.

We also cleaned out the hall closet.  We Z(by that I mean the hubby and kids) use as all-purpose stashing. D2 had bought a bag of scrap fabric at the local thrift shop to learn how to sew.

 She doesn't like sewing, so it got shoved the bottomless closet.  When we had found it, I put in the pile things NOT going back in.  S2 decided he wanted to make some money, so I paid him to sort it. 

And not just by fabric, he had to pin block sets together.  He learned what is needed for a 9-patch, he helped with deciding colors and made himself a couple dollars. 

And now I have my new leader & ender project.

These must be pretty old, as lots of the fabrics are blends instead of cotton.  Talking to an older quilter, I learned there was a time when 100% cotton was very hard to find, since synthetics were the economic and environmental future.  I think it'll make a great picnic blanket (or 2 or 3).

This week I am piecing some sewing accessory projects and getting ready for school to start. 

Summer is here, kids are home, and I am trying not to lose my mind already.  I decided to participate in the Moda Bakeshop Trifle-Dish-Sew-Along, which may have been a dumb decision on my part. Two days to piece each row?  Are they nuts?  I have a partially finished row, and some of the other fabrics picked out.  Part of my reason for doing it was to use up some scraps.  Which leads to a lot of extra work, since I don't buy pre-cuts. 

I did finish a couple of projcts over the last couple of weeks.  First were some Halloween coasters.

The one under the Coke bottle was finished back in February, and I still have 5 more to go.  But they will be ready for Halloween!

I also finished a project back for my wool knitting projects.

My cat LOVES wool yarn, and I have to very conscious about where I put them.  I had this fabric sitting for over 5 years!  I loved it too much to cut, so when I found these handles on sale, I thought perfect.  It is now holding 3 gorgeous balls of wool yarn for a felting project.  And the cat can smell it, but he can't get to it!

And this lovely little cowl will be ready when fall hits.  Which is never very long from June around here.

Lovely, soft, baby alpaca DH got me for Mother's Day.  In as close to olive green as he could get!

This week I'll see about finishing the piece work for Trifle quilt, and maybe finish that felting project.

I thought I would get stuff done!

Well, I didn't get my quilt bound, since I lost the binding fabric.  I did get the binding sewn on to the Halloween coasters, but not stitched down. So, fingers crossed, they will be finished this week. I hope!

I did get several blocks done for D2. Bright sawtooth stars with black backgrounds, all very scrappy.  I am so glad D2 and EJ love those bright colors, or I don't know what I'd do! 

This will be the center block, since it's her favorite so far.

I get why I didn't finish anything, the kids have started winding up the school year.  S1 had his first camping season camp out, as well as finishing his Eagle requirements.  He HAS to be done by Friday, because then my baby turns 18!

D2 and S2 had dance rehearsals and recitals over the last week.  That was lot of driving around, and then D2 started play rehearsals! We also had the LAST FIELD TRIP of the year!!  All the kids say that like some dodos talking about a certain watermelon!  Somewhere in there we squeezed in some yard and house work, as well as helping DH with a couple house projects.   In fact, I'm hoping he can do that last little bit today!  There may be some finishing touches later, but right now he just wants to get the basics done!

My favorite vase

 Somewhere this spring, I discovered I *like* flowers in the house.  Not that I didn't before, I just never thought about it.  So, whenever I finish the grocery shopping, I try to pick up a small bouquet of flowers.  I'd rather just cut some out of the yard, but we don't have flowers in the yard. Yet.  So this week, DH and I had to stop at the store to pick something up for dinner after a crazy day.  And he asks me if I've bought any flowers lately. I told him no, it wasn't in the budget. So, he bought me a some of the big daisies I love!

Well, the previous bouquets I had bought were way too big for this vase.  But the daisies were perfect!  I may have to plant some for next year!  The thing I love about this vase is that it isn't a vase, of course.  It's century old milk bottle! The amount of milk would not have lasted long in our house.  They must have gotten several a day.

The only thing is I don't know how to read the date.

Is that January 11, 1914 or November 1, 1914?  When DH saw the date, he asked where I found milk in a glass bottle in the year 2014.  I had to tell him to think about it. I wish I had taken a photo of his face the light bulb went on.   Then he thought it was even cooler.  Though he would apparently be ok with me buying milk in glass bottles.

June is off to a great OPAM start!!

The month has just started and I already have 1 finish, with a couple of more soon to follow!

My first finish of the month is a cute little tote bag for EJ.  I didn't follow a pattern, I just went with my gut.  She hauls quite a bit back and forth from work, and bag made just for her is always better than a grocery bag, re-usable or not.

Almost all my red, black, and white scraps have been used up!  YAY!!  It's always exciting when I see a dent made in the fabric stash.  I may have enough bits and pieces left to make her a set of coasters, but I make no promises. 

Next up is to finally finish my Halloween coasters.  They've been sitting for a while, and all they need is binding.  Or maybe bind a quilt that has been sitting for the last month!

And this is the part the little boys in the house just can't get over!  The rest of the surprise DH bought me!  Last week I showed you this:

The lovely pot that holds my cotton yarns now!  I kind of don't want to finish the project that is sticking out. I like it there!

Yep...my wonderful husband bought me an antique chair!  The finish matches my furniture pretty well.  It's my spot to take off my shoes, since DH and I are on different schedules. When I sit on the bed, I usually end up waking him up.  But the part the boys can't get over is this

I won't quote the kids here, but they were surprised that, well, there was a time before indoor plumbing. And that someone actually donated it to the auction.  The silent auction ladies were surprised that someone bought it!

I was surprised no one saw the potential.  If I were into the shabby chic look a little more literally, this would be beautiful in the chippy white.  But with 4 kids, there is no way that would work any where in this house :)   Some bleach and furniture polish and a little wood glue, and it's beautiful as is.  The seat cover even matches the green in our room.  While the chair had humble beginnings, I'm sure that's doesn't mean it's unusable FOREVER!  What I would like to find is something to tell me how old it is.  And how many shawls and sweaters I can fit in there.  One cannot have to many sweaters and shawls and cardigans on the NOP.

I actually finished something!

I haven't had an OPAM finish in a while.  BASH kind of took over my life for a while there, and then I spent a week trying to get the house stuff caught up.  But now, finally, I had some time to sit down and sew.  My first finish was a hotpad.

Not too exciting, but still it's DONE!  And in my house, we never have enough hotpads.  These have stood up rather well to the wear and tear they get.  Much better than the store bought one we have.  Which I am so very slowly replacing.

Next I finished a cute little basket.  I'd like to think I'm really ahead for next year, but the reality is that this has been sitting for a couple of years in a state of almost finished.

I had made several of these for the teachers a couple years back, and wound up cutting out extras.  You know how you get on a roll when strip cutting?  So as I finished them and stacked them up to be filled with goodies, I had an extra.  So I put it away since I was on a deadline and thought I'd finish it the next weekend.  All I had to do to finish it was sew in the lining and add the trim.  D2 decided it needed trim and picked it out for this, since I have more than enough trim to last a lifetime and need to start using it!

I'm not sure what I will accomplish this week.   My plans are small and few.

The first half of a wonderful surprise!

A huge part of this week has passed by in a haze as we recovered from the days and hours of BASH prep.  The fundraiser did AMAZING and the rumor right now is that we had a record breaking year.  I found one "must have" in the silent auction.  Now, whenever I find a must-have treasure, we almost never have the money for it, even if it's something we need anyways.  But when this item came in for silent auction, I saw and started thinking I can use on of those.  I can keep yarn in it! My stash is somehow not getting smaller.  Well, knowing it wasn't in the budget, I told DH about it anyway.  He thought I was nuts, which is ok. I probably am. 

The night of BASH came, and DH calls me from the gym's kitchen to ask if I really want this item.  I went down a little later to supervise clean up, and the live auction had not started yet.  So I helped the ladies that where closing up the silent auction.  And the thing I wanted was bid on.  I usually don't bid. I'm a buy it now kind of girl.  I get no enjoyment out of the "did I or didn't I".  Turns out, no, the bidder didn't win, someone had paid the buy it now, but it wasn't my husband.  Now I'm not heavily emotionally invested in this thing.  But sometimes if items don't go during the auction, we can buy it at actual value after wards.  You just need to let someone know if you're interested in something.  Now another reason BASH was success this year, all but 2 items went that night!  There were some staging reasons why those 2 items didn't go, and it's something we can work on for next year. 

So we get home.  We lock the van, and go to bed.  Sunday morning we are piling in the van to head to the church, and there it is.

A large stoneware urn.  Perfect for holding my cotton yarns.  And while I didn't think I had enough to go in it, I was obviously wrong!  I have to hide my wool yarns from the cat, so I can only have the cotton out.  I haven't been able to find a year for it yet, so I'm not sure how old it is.  Just that it is really old. 

See those lovely, real, age marks?   And cracks?  Which is why it is holding yarn and not flowers :)!

I love the little detail on the top of the handle.  Just little fluff to make a useful thing beautiful!! There is another piece that needs some TLC before I get any photos for it.  Hopefully DH will have that done next week.

BASH is over!

Finally!   BASH is over!  And I have my computer back!  I am feeling a little lost this morning, since I have spent so many days at the school, that I don't quite know what to do.  I want to sew, but I need to clean, and it all sounds like so much work.  So I'm not sure how far I'll get today, but I figure if I just do a little bit at a time, I'll be caught up by the end of the week.  I've had a few projects floating around in my mind that I've been dying to start, so those are second on my to-do list. The first is my house.  No one can find anything, and while they did a great job keeping up on the dishes and trash, it was all the detail stuff they don't think about. Like dusting, sweeping UNDER things.  So off to dig out some fabric and thread, and maybe find some more coffee!

My puter is back!

So now I can do internet things again! YAY!  I finished nothing for OPAM in April, and as the decorations chair for the kids' school fundraiser, I see nothing getting finished in May either.  I have no idea why I said I would do this project, probably because no one else would.  But who knows, I may be able to sneak at least one thing in.  And I need to take photos of March's finishes!  But I need to empty the sd cards first.  Oh my goodness, you never know what you have til it's gone, and that applies so well to computers!!!

Well, it's been interesting.  My computer died a sudden death, I have no where to upload photos without it, DH went to a comic convention, and BASH is in 6 weeks.  Thankfully D2 is allowing me use of her computer if I "need" it, LOL!  She is turning into a bossy little broad!

My finished for this month were a scarf, hat, wrist warmers, and headband.  Hopefully I can get photos next week! I'm off!
